Application and selection

This course is student-oriented with focus on PhD students and postdoc fellows involved in research related to understanding and engineering enzyme catalysis, however applications from senior researchers with experience in enzyme catalysis are also welcome. A limited number of places is available to ensure optimal interactions between students and teachers. 

Participant’s application includes: (i) CV (ii) Motivation letter that consists of a short description of the ongoing research project including participant's research interests and explanation of how participant will benefit from the attendance of this course, (iii) Supervisor recommendation letter.

Selection will be based on provided information using as sole criteria the quality of the application, taking into account the match between the applicant’s interest and objectives of the course. Students with projects that will immediately benefit from the topics addressed in the course will be prioritized. Geographical distribution and gender balance may also be taken into consideration.

Accepted participants should prepare a 2-slides PowerPoint presentation on their current project for a brief, 2-min, presentation. Accepted participants that will bring a poster can also provide an abstract for the program book. The abstract should be provided as a Word document and should not exceed one page.

How to apply

By the deadline of June 30, 2023:

1. Complete an application order (see the "Register Login" button at the top of the page) through the registration portal on this event website. When you complete an order you will receive an 'order received E-mail' with full instructions on how to proceed with your application and a copy of the order in PDF. Please check your spam or junk mail in case this E-mail is not delivered in your inbox.

2. During this process, upload a single file (accepted format is PDF) containing all supporting documents for your application. Please use febs-comp-firstname-secondname as the filename . 

a. Concise CV (max 2 pages)
b. Motivation letter with summary of your reasons for applying to the event, your research interests and description of ongoing project related to the topic of the course (max 2 pages). Please indicate and explain which of the five focus topics would directly bring benefit to your own research. Please confirm that it is possible to install software on the laptop that you will use during the course, in advance of the actual course event. Please, in your application indicate whether you need accommodation.
c. Letter of recommendation from your head/supervisor
d. For applicants for FEBS Youth Travel Fund awards, please provide your Constituent Society membership proof, age and other details, as described on the “Travel Grants" page. The applicant should be not older than 35, should be registered as a PhD student at an institute of higher learning in a country where there is a FEBS Constituent Society or should be a postdoctoral scientist within five years of having completed a PhD thesis, working in a country where there is a FEBS Constituent Society.

Notification

You will be notified of the outcome of your application by July 10, 2023

Registration fees

The regular registration fee is 350€ (to be paid after acceptance). For applications completed  before March 31 the early-bird registration fee will be  250€ (to be paid after acceptance).

In order to provide efficient interactions between students and teachers we can accept at most 30 students.

Course material will be provided via an on-line platform.

The registration fee covers accommodation (five nights: Sun-Fri) in a shared double room with breakfast. Coffee/tea and lunch during the course will be provided at no extra costs. Also organised is a joint dinner in the city center of Zagreb on Wednesday evening.

The travel costs are not covered. Secretarial assistance will be provided for making travel arrangements. Please, in your application indicate whether you need accommodation. Accommodation in a single room can be arranged with extra cost, please contact the organisers for more details.

Personal  support will be provided in the lecture room to help with connection, program installation, tutorials and hands-on sessions.  Participants should bring and use their own laptops for the tutorials. In case software on the laptop needs to be installed, we will provide support prior to the course event.

We will provide support to help with tutorials for participants. Local staff will also help with communication with lecturers who will give their lectures remotely.  

Terms and Conditions

    By registering for the event, participants (also referred to as 'you') are entering an agreement with the Course Organizer(s) Course Organisers, and you are indicating acceptance to the terms and conditions set out below.

    Methods of Payment

    Payments must be made by bank transfer; details will be included in your outcome notification E-mail. Payments should have been completed before August 15, 2023.

    Bank charges are the responsibility of the participant and should be paid at source. Your Name, Surname and Order ID must be indicated on the transaction receipt of the bank transfer.

    A confirmation notification will be sent to you when organizers receive the fund and confirm your registration in the system. If you do not receive confirmation within 10 business days after having completed the payment, please contact [info@computationalenzymeengineering2023.febsevents.org]. 

    Registration cancellation & refund policy

    All registration cancellation requests should be sent to (info@computationalenzymeengineering2023.febsevents.org) in writing. For cancellation requests received on or before August 15 the full payment, less bank charges, will be refunded; for cancellation requests received on and after August 15 the full amount will be charged and no refunds will be made. 

    Modification and cancellation of the event

    The Course Organizers are intending to run the event as an in-person meeting, but if they decide at any time that it is not possible to continue with an inperson event due to pandemic or other such restrictions, the event is changed accordingly. The Course Organizers will give you as much advance notice as possible if such changes are necessary. The Course organizers reserve the right to modify the Course programme, which is published as an indication only.

    If the event is cancelled, the Course Organizers will refund you the registration fee less bank charges. Organizers may cancel the event as a result of circumstances outside of their reasonable control, including (but not limited to) pandemic, natural disaster, adverse weather conditions, fire or closure of airports. Where possible, they will endeavour to provide reasonable advance notice of any such cancellation.

    Neither FEBS nor the Course Organizers shall be held liable for any other costs or losses incurred.

    Disclaimer

    The Course organizers take all reasonable care in making arrangements, and shall follow all available guidance from the Croatian government in relation to making the event COVID-19 safe. They act only as agents in securing hotels, transport and travel services, and shall in no event be liable for acts or omissions in the event of injury, damage, loss, accident delay or irregularity of any kind whatsoever during arrangements organized through contractors. Hotel and transportation services are subject to the terms and conditions under which they are offered to the general public.

    Where the event is hosted virtually, or uses online elements during an in-person event, the Course Organizers and FEBS do not guarantee that the event hosting site and its related software, or any content on it, will always be available or be uninterrupted. We will not be liable to you for any loss or damage, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, even if foreseeable, arising under or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, the event hosting site and its related software. We do not guarantee that the event hosting site will be secure or free from bugs or viruses and you are responsible for configuring your information technology, computer programmes and platform to access the event hosting site.

    In the absence of any negligence or other breach of duty by the Course Organizers or FEBS, these parties shall not be responsible for any bodily injury, illness, death or property damages (including theft) sustained by participants during the event whether the event be attended at a venue or via the event hosting site.In any event, whether the event be attended at a venue or via the event hosting site, neither the Course Organizers nor FEBS accept liability for damages or costs in the event of bodily injury, death, property damage, illness, disruption to travel plans and costs incurred as a result of events outside of their reasonable control, including (but not limited to) pandemic, natural disaster, adverse weather conditions, fire or closure of airports.

    Governing law

    Any dispute resulting from the above terms and conditions will be subject to Croatian law, and by accepting these terms you are submitting yourself to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Croatia.
